ANNOUNCEMENT
The Commissioners announced that in response to the flooding that occurred in
the Houston Borough and Cross Creek Township areas, they have dispatched staff to these
areas to examine the streams for possible obstructions that may have contributed to the
recent flooding. If there are obstructions in and around the stream beds, and if it is
within the County's capability to correct the situation, it will be done. Further, the
Commissioners have instructed their staff to: (1) identify property owners along the
stream; (2) prepare for work crews to cut trees and clear debris from certain stream
banks, if necessary; and (3) communicate with Houston Borough concerning the possible
use of vehicles and equipment.
The Commissioners also noted that a meeting is being arranged for Thursday,
October 4th, among local, county, federal and state officials along with officials from
the Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Soil Conservation Service to explain the
possibility of long term solutions to the flooding problems. The Commissioners stated
that they will request the Federal Government to conduct a study of the Chartiers Creek
Watershed in the Houston area to determine the best method of flood control. They will
also speak to the U.S. Soil Conservation Service concerning the degree of flood
protection that exists in the Cross Creek area.
