LANE, JOHN MALZA, CommrssraNE t 0 The following letters from Commissioner William J. `,ane, were read and upon motion by Mr. Pettit, seconded by Mr. Mazza, Commissioner Lanes resignation was regretfully accepted as submitted, effective June 1, 1958, motion carried. Fredericktown, Penna. May 3, 1958 Francis E. Pettit John Mazza County Commissioners Court House Washington, Penna. Gentlemen, I want to inform you that I have decided to submit my resignation as County Com;- miesioner of Washington County as of June 1, 1958. I want you to be the first to know of my decision. We have shared the greatest mutual respect for each other and., together, we have carp• rigid on our duties and responsibilities in furthering the best interests of the citizens of Washington Cotmty. I want you to know that my association with you, as colleagues, has been a source of great pleasure and satisfaction to me. My action in resigning is prompted by two emery compelling reasons_* The first re- lates to my service as State Senator, representing the citizens of Washington and Greene Counties for the past twelve years. My seniority status in the Senate will give me a"greater opportunity to better serve and advance the interests of may district, the Commonwealth, and the people who have so loyally supported me in the past. My increased responsibilities will require all of my time at Harrisburg; and I am determined to do the best job I can as State Senator. Under the circumstances, as a County Commissioner in the future, I would not be able to devote the time and attention to the duties, which the office requires and which the public is entitled to ex- pect. As you know, in the past I have devoted may best efforts to being a conscientious Commis- sioner. I cannot change my nature and in the future do half a job. I must be sincere with myself and the citizens of the County, ' As State Senator, I will be able to devote more time to the things, to which I an dedicated, namely: the improvement of the education system of the Commonwealth; welfare legis- lation; aid for the mentally retarded and handicapped children; help for the aged, the sick, the disabled and the infirm; the combatting of juvenile delinquency; the iiberatlizing of legislation relating to Workmens Compensation, Unemployment Compensation and Occupational Diseases; the de- velopment of conservation, flood control and economic expansion; the promotion of new and increas- ed industrialzation, particularly in economically distressed areas, such as Washington and Greene Counties; aid to the farmers; and the extension and modernization of local reads and streets and the state highway system. A second and impelling reason is purely personal. My wife and I suffered our greatest sorrow in the loss of our beloved son. The relinquishment of my position as County Commissioner will give me more time to devote to my wife and to provide the sustaining comfort and consolation, which she so needs and deserves. This consideration'is of utmost importance and is above all else in my thinking. I am sure that every father and mother will understand;, my feelings. , Gentlemen, it is with sincere regret, but with deepest appreciation for your past support and that of the citizens of Washington County, that I feel constrained to tender my resignation as County Commissioner for the County of Washington as of June 1, 1958. You will find my formal resignation enclosed. Sincerely, William J, Lane /s/ WJL:dd May 3, 1958 Mr. Francis E.
