BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS WASHINGTON COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA
FRANCIS E. PETTIT, W. J. LANE, JOHN MAZZA, COMMISSIONERS
55
No. 55
Office of the County Commissioners
Washington, Pa., August 25, 1952
Board of County Commissioners in regular session, those present being Messrs.
Pettit, Lane and Mazza.
Motion by Mr. Lane, seconded by Mr. Mazza, that the Board for the Assessment and
Revision of Taxes be authorized to prepare voucher for refund in the total amount of $40.62 in
favor of J. A. Mendenhall and Fae P. King of Weirton, Nest Virginia, for county taxes for the
years 1949, 1950 and 1951 on a duplicate assessment on 64 acres of surface at $1,500-Letitia
Curry tract, in Hanover Township, receipts for which are attached. This assessment was a trans-
fer out of the Letitia Curry Estate in 1944 to Mendenhall and King, and --in the same year, an
assessment in the name of the Letitia Curry Estate was added to the records by adjustment #1648
as having been "missed on the list", making a duplication in that year. This double assessment -
or duplication, continued on the records and taxes were paid by Mendenhall and King each year
and also by the Letitia Curry Estate. The Curry Estate sold this surface to Calvin and Rose M.
Pethtel in 1952 and it is now properly assessed to them. Mendenhall and King paid the taxes on
this 64-acre assessment, thinking it was a 72-acre assessment deeded to them in 1942 DB 664-361
from Florence Johnson, but never transferred, remaining in the Florence Johnson name on the re-
cords until 1952 when the error was found and the proper correction made. There are no outstand-
ing taxes against either the 64-acre assessment or the 72-acre assessment. Attested copies of
this minute be furnished the Hanover taxes authorities as a basis for refund of local taxes paid
and for which receipts are attached.
Motion carried.
There being no further business to come before the Board at this time, the meeting
adjourned.
